BASKETBALL CAMP FOR GIRLS AT SUMPOORNA

Twelve girls from Bishop Sargent School, Tumkur came for this camp. On the first day, it was pathetic performance in learning. Eating all sorts of junk that they had brought from home - they hardly ate anything. But day two was when `real learning' began. Basic skills in basketball were explained in theory classes supplemented by real practicals. Slowly and steadily they began to dribble the ball with greater ease - they stopped catching the ball with both hands and `no see ball' rule was slowly implemented.

They learnt different dribbling skills in a very disciplined way. The coaches were satisfied. But suddenly a miracle took place. They started playing MATCHES without actually any WWF wrestling or hitting each other. They learnt to read through gestures and body language what their team players wanted them to do. They went into a huddle during breaks and discussed how they are going to play. INDIAN NBA STARS OF THE FUTURE - FROM NOOKS OF RURAL INDIA?

NEW BASKETBALL COURT AT TUMKUR

Bishop Sargent School, Tumkur will have the inauguration of a clay Basketball court on 11th Dec, 2007 at 9 a.m. More than 1000 children would be introduced to the game on a single day by SUMPOORNA coaches. Sports education is a `new word' - but India must awaken its one billion people to the glory it deserves, inspite of the `obstacles'.

SUMPOORNA BASKETBALL SCHOOL

Having been a Basketball player since my childhood - I know the enormous benefits of playing this fast game. Lazy games like cricket donot allow young players to develop `fitness' and this in turn creates very few athletic children. Indian children suffer from `injuries' because of lack of awareness about `exercise on a regular basis. Exercising, by itself is boring and no one in his right mind would be able to sustain their interest for a long time.

THIS IS WHERE BASKETBALL can come in. Playing the game from a few minutes to an hour can give exercise and JOY [which is sustained]. You become a hoop junkie, develop extra-ordinary fitness, and particularly children have a head-start in `fitness' compared to the people who donot play this game. For the past twenty years having coached children in leading schools of Bangalore - I was able to understand its vast potential. But as I retire out of my active life in Bangalore to the `cocoon' of a small village in Tumkur I have established SUMPOORNA - Basketball school of India - for the rural children. For the last two and half years children from Tumkur and various rural areas have come in hundreds to our campus to learn the game. Tournaments were successfully conducted and what seemed impossible when we started is now `galloping'.

Infrastructure for Basketball court isn't difficult to create if the will is there. We have extended co-operation to all institutions who have shown interest in this respect. We wish to create minimum of one clay court for Basketball in every taluk of Distt. Tumkur - if interested Basketball players come forward - we can provide direction.
