SUMPOORNA'S AMBASSADORS OF BASKETBALL VISIT JNV YENIGADALE ON 2ND-3RD & 4TH JULY

Mrs Vedavathi, Physical Edcuation teacher of JAWAHAR NAVODAYA VIDYALAYA, has invited the ambassadors of basketball from SUMPOORNA to help train basketball players. Without blinking my eyes I have agreed. Promoting basketball in remotest corners is our specialisation. AND WE ARE GOING TO YENIGADALE second time. Whenever, wherever we are called we shall go. Six boys and six girls from ST. MARY'S GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL, TUMKUR along with a senior player Mr. Bigith will accompany me.

The balls will bounce in this silent tiny town almost on the border of Karnataka. Memories of last camp still linger. There were tears in the eyes of the students when we were leaving. We didn't want to go and they didn't want us to go. LOVE FOR BASKETBALL brings us together again.

I wonder, if there are BASKETBALL PLAYERS across the width and length of India, who could do what we are doing - then surely this nation can become a SUPER SPORTING NATION. The heart-beat of India lies in such rural areas and unless BASKETBALL CAN BE TAKEN TO EVERY NOOK AND CORNER, I don't think India can succeed. Thank you, Mrs Vedavathi for calling us again - and we promise WE WILL COME as long as you keep calling us. THE BOARDS OF JNV YENIGADALE WILL RING UP WITH THE BOUNCING BALL.

BASKETBALL PROMOTION BY BASKETBALL PLAYERS!

BASKETBALL PLAYERS' ATTITUDE IS KEY TO PROMOTING
Having been part of the basketball scene for almost 45 years - I would like to mention the following points :
1. There are very few basketball coaches - so SENIOR PLAYERS must don on this role.
2. Many schools have `unusable' infrastructure - this must be set right.
3. Particularly new schools should be targeted - they should be convinced to provide
basketball courts or at least shooting posts.
4. Clubs are very indifferent to young children - this must change. A social responsibility should be to ask schools to use their grounds during day time - when they are not being used. Senior players can help them on rotation basis. Many courts are used as cricket grounds - badminton courts etc. It is not very funny!
5. THERE SHOULD BE NO LINKAGE between `state level basketball' and `grass root promotion of basketball. This creates untold misery for children below 13 and 15. Too much is made of being part of the `state team'.
6. There should be number of tournaments with the right `learning environment'.
7. FIVE A SIDE tournaments ensure all play. Bench sitting should be scrapped.
Please add more points to the above. We at SUMPOORNA are already aggressively pushing these issues and have `coerced' many institutions into making courts, conducting tournaments - we would like to share our experiences with other basketball lovers. Stop blaming other sports' for lack of basketball's popularity.
Ultimately, the basketball players' attitude is the key to promoting of this game. Log on to sumpoornatumkur. blogspot.com to see how we are working in Tumkur distt of Karnataka. WE ARE READY TO PROVIDE SUPPORT TO ANY BASKETBALL PROMOTION INITIATIVE.

THE BIG GUYS

SUMPOORNA CUP raised the emotions of senior basketball players. However, there was a lack of understanding in them regarding fouls and playing norms. So I had declared at the end of the tournament that there will be a special camp for them on 4th and 5th July. Practice was held on 4th at Bishop Sargant in the morning - at St. Mary's in the afternoor. On 5th almost 17 players travelled to SUMPOORNA.

There was a `desire' in them to understand the finer aspects of the game - that motivated me to explain some `self learning' points.

THE MATCHES ARE OVER - HOOP MANIA HAS BEGUN IN TUMKUR!

SUMPOORNA BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT 2009 is another milestone in the history of tumkur sports. More than FIFTY TEAMS participated - the participants' excitement knew no bounds. The competition was little tougher this year - hence an occassional losing of temper by senior players. WHO WANTS TO LOSE?

But the realisation that learning must continue and that arguments don't win matches [only scoring baskets does]- a saner view prevailed. Not only that - the senior players agreed to attend a basketball workshop at Betta Shambhunahalli which will be again a first of its kind.

The juniors, of course, enjoyed the tournament - they clapped for good scoring baskets even though it was against their school team. PRASHANT, as ususal, with his dummies and fakes - with impossible angle baskets captured the imagination of everyone, especially senior players. Couple of them threw Prashant like a basketball in the air.

Mr Arunodaya continues to surprise me - from being a foot soldier - to a General - he gets things done amazingly. He has now what it takes to conduct such tournaments. Satish and Ravi kumar came from Koratagere to witness the finals. They very badly want me to take a lead to make a good RCC court at Koratagere. I MUST!

Don Bosco wants a state of the art basketball court. Useful time was spent in their school and the work can be taken up in right earnest after the estimates are approved.

Sister Julia is leaving St. Mary's - another person who always treated us with great love and affection. We wish her the best.

Amogh's family provided me the `home' I always seek when I am outstation.

PE teacher from JNV, Urdigere - brought our newest SUMPOORNA FAMILY trainees and surprise of surprise they reached the semi-finals. Congratulations to all of them.
JNV children are full of love under their silent demeanor - I should know,I am a residential school product. When I see them - so many memories come and overwhelm me.

Statistics will be put in a separate note-sheet. They are not that important. TUMKUR BASKETBALL WON - that is more important.

Mr. Suresh with his flock of Bishop Sargent basketball teams provided exemplary co-operation and as usual he is very good natured in all environments. He was always there - whenever he was needed. Conducting SARGANTINE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT 2009 in the last week of August would be mainly his responsibility.

I SHOULD SLOWLY WITHDRAW from institutions where other persons can take over the mantle and continue promotion of basketball. That would be my victory.

SPARSH will start basketball coaching from Monday in Bishop Sargant.

SUMPOORNA 2009 BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT BEGINS TOMORROW! WANT TO SEE MAGIC?

There are no more doubts, the tournament is well on its way - preparations are done. Last minute phone calls from students for giving entries. We are accepting every one. The basketball beginners, the basketball players and the basketball GODS all will gather under the banner of SUMPOORNA.

Everyone would be a soldier of this battle of sports revolution. These players will shed their sweat to herald a unique experiment in rural sports promotion. TUMKUR will have its own share under the `basketball sun' - we are ready to take on all other districts nay other states - countries.

Three years of tireless march in SUMPOORNA campus and other campuses as ambassadors of basketball - surely we will see MAGIC on 26th and 27th.
